Ex- FBI director James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and obstructing a legislative process.

His lawyer submitted the response acting as his counsel in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

His attorney declared he would attempt to have the legal matter thrown out for several reasons including that his defendant, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

James Comey was charged soon after the former president urged his attorney general to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative advised the magistrate they aimed to file various legal requests to throw out the proceedings before a legal hearing, claiming the legal action was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully designated to handle the case.

The former director's legal matter was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from the former president after his investigation into another political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey came across in good spirits as he came into the court on mid-week, chatting with his legal team and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, his wife and daughter Maureen, a government attorney who the former government dismissed.

Following the reading to the magistrate recite his legal protections and the dual charges against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he comprehended the accusations.

"I do your honour. Appreciate it," he told the proceedings.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about four months into Trump's first term as president. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the election effort.

During his tenure, the director triggered a counter-response from the Democratic party when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was examining presidential nominee the candidate's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not filed, causing negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys claim the former director gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the Senate by claiming he had not approved a person at the agency to disclose to news outlets data about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also accuse Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, hinder and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

Through a recording James Comey published to his online platform after he was accused, he stated he was not guilty and alleged Donald Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"My family and I have understood for a long time that there are consequences to opposing Mr Trump," he said. "We will not live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "So let's have a court case."

These allegations against the former director emerged after Trump posted on social media calling for his top legal official, Pam Bondi, charge James Comey and additional individuals.
